BE: Royal Decree on varnish as food contact material

21 November 2016

In Belgium, the use of varnish and coatings (hereinafter varnish) is regulated in the Royal Decree of 25 September 2016 concerning varnish and coatings intended to come into contact with food products.
This Royal Decree regulates the composition of the various types of varnish and lays down migration limits and tests for varnish for materials and articles of metal; varnish for flexible materials and articles; varnish for applications of high capacity in the food industry.
The Royal Decree also sets the requirement to make sure that varnishes intended to come into contact with food come with a written declaration of compliance (FOD Public Health, 20 October 2016).
