Tenfold increase in childhood/adolescent obesity in 4 decades

30 October 2017

The world will have more obese children and adolescents than underweight by 2022, according to a new study by Imperial College London and World Health Organization (WHO). The number of obese children and adolescents (aged 5 to 19 years) worldwide has risen tenfold in the past four decades, according to the researchers.
If current trends continue, more children and adolescents will be obese than moderately or severely underweight by 2022. The rise in childhood and adolescent obesity in low- and middle-income countries, especially in Asia, has accelerated since 1975. An article about the research was published in The Lancet (News Item Imperial College London, 10 October 2017).
