Silver nanodots in antimicrobial packaging applications

26 November 2014

Antimicrobial packaging could significantly decrease food wastage and add value for producers by prolonging the shelf life. Researchers at University College in Ireland developed a novel method for generating antimicrobial surfaces for generating highly uniform size and shape defined NPs (as nanodots) on a surface in a well-defined arrangement without the need of expensive lithographic techniques.
They found that the developed silver nanodot surfaces exhibited good antimicrobial activity against bacteria and can potentially be used in antimicrobial packaging applications. An article about the research is published in Innovative Food Science & Emerging Technologies.
