UK: New waste prevention program for England launched

03 February 2014

Following a public consultation on a proposal, the UK’s Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) launched a new waste prevention program in December 2013 specific to England. National waste prevention plans are required by the revised EU Waste Framework Directive (Scotland and Wales have separate national waste prevention programs).
The program seeks to reduce waste, use products longer, repair broken items, and enable reuse of items by others. It includes activities for consumers and manufacturers and other businesses, and it focuses on 8 priority areas for reduction, including plastic and paper and cardboard (Recycling Laws International, 18 December 2013).
