Retail market developments
ShoppingTomorrow (in Dutch) has published the book 'The Future of the Journey'. In 2019, ShoppingTomorrow experts studied various topics related to online and offline shopping behaviour within the B2B and B2C markets. The book's Bluepapers can be downloaded after filling in your details (in Dutch).
According to a report (in Dutch, 6.3 MB) by the SRA (in Dutch), Dutch entrepreneurs in the retail sector are positive about 2020. They expect a substantial increase in turnover and profit.
In the monthly Retail Update the Rabobank (in Dutch) looks at developments in the Dutch retail sector. ABN AMRO (in Dutch) also presents its sector forecast (in Dutch, 345 kB). Despite the expected revenue growth of retail as a whole, ABN AMRO emphasises that the outlook for many individual retailers may be less favourable.
The NOS (in Dutch) reports that, according to IRI and Nielsen, in 2019 the discounters Aldi and Lidl saw their market share decrease by a few tenths of percentage points. Another article by Nielsen shows the seven driving forces behind the future of the EU FMCG and retail market.

Bureau RMC (in Dutch) has published an overview of the main shopping trends of 2019. In 2019 the shopping streets have become quieter again.

E-commerce developments
Metapack published ‘The global e-commerce consumer report’, which provides a picture of consumer behaviour and their expectations of delivery when shopping online. CBS (in Dutch) reports on the basis of ongoing research, that in the third quarter of 2019, Dutch consumers spent nearly 20% more in foreign webstores than in 2018. A eurostat article takes a closer look at the e-commerce of individuals in the European Union.
E-commerce Europe’s Polish member, The Chamber of Digital Economy, published a report (1.5 MB) on sustainability in e-commerce. The report, titled Green Generation, shows that Polish consumers generally spot environmentally-unfriendly behaviours of retailers.
According to research (in Dutch) by Descartes (in Dutch) two out of five (41%) consumers are willing to pay extra for the delivery of an online order if they opt for a sustainable logistics process.
Packaging World reports that a new e-commerce packaging group aims for two-way dialog with retailers. Several big brand owners have teamed up as the E-com Packaging Council (ECPC) in an effort to help steer the discussions with Amazon, Walmart, Target, and others.

In-store developments
On 6 February 2020, Merle Bruhn held a colloquium entitled ‘The evolution of the shopping experience: Case Study about implementation of AR in a Point-Of-Sale display’ as part of her master assignment at the University of Twente. Chairman of the assessment committee was professor Roland ten Klooster who holds the NVC Chair Packaging Design and Management.
Locatus (in Dutch) has published the top-100 points of sale and retail spots in the Dutch and Belgian retail. You can download the reports after filling in your details (in Dutch).
In the report (292 kB), titled “Channel Trends in CPG Today”, IRI analyses how the shift towards consumers prioritising convenience and value in their shopping experiences is affecting consumer shopping channel preferences and in-store behaviours.
