Trends and developments
The 2019 PMMI report ‘Trends and Advances in Food Packaging and Processing’ presents a collective voice of the largest food manufacturers and SMEs sharing their insight into the changes and challenges taking place on the plant floor. ISO has recently published ISO 14007:2019, Environmental management ‘Guidelines for determining environmental costs and benefits’. Moonen Packaging (in Dutch) has published 'The sixth element of Total Cost of Shipment', a white paper about adding an extra variable (CO2 Footprint) to calculate transport costs. In the next three years, the Medical Drone Service (MDS) consortium will investigate how Avy’s long range wing drone can be a solution for medical deliveries.

Industry
Industry4Europe, a coalition representing the diversity of the EU’s industrial base, published its new Joint Paper ‘A long-term strategy for Europe’s industrial future: from words to action’.
DHL has published the 2019 DHL Global Connectedness Index (6.49 MB). Max Lemke of DG Connect has received the first copy of the report (2.1 MB) ‘Industrial B2B platforms: The race Europe cannot afford to lose’ by TNO.
Agoria (in Dutch) has published a whitepaper on the digital maturity of industrial SMEs in Belgium. The study shows a direct link between the way of working and thinking, the culture and the degree of success of digital projects. You can download it (in Dutch) after filling in your details.
Ultimaker has published the 3D Printing Sentiment Index, a measure of market awareness and adoption as well as overall sentiment towards the potential impact of the technology.

Automation and Artificial intelligence
The 2nd drupa Spotlight provides an in-depth analysis of workflow automation.
Deloitte has released the 19th edition of its ‘Technology, Media & Telecommunications Predictions’, which looks at three overarching themes: interconnectivity between individual technologies, IoT and introduction of new services and products.
A new report (3.3 MB) from the Capgemini Research Institute highlights that the European market is leading in terms of implementing Artificial Intelligence (AI) in manufacturing operations. In another report (4.8 MB) the company states that smart factories are set to boost the global economy by $1.5 trillion by 2023.
VUB has opened the AI Experience Center, a showcase for AI and robotics.
The interregional cooperation project SMARTY, aims to establish a common basis for policy learning in order to deal with the main challenges hampering the diffusion of Industry 4.0 solutions and their enabling potential into the European SME ecosystem.
PwC has published a report (11.3 MB) about the role of digitisation in reshaping the industrial manufacturing industry.
Advances in Materials Science and Engineering has published an article (1.05 MB) about an automatic pick-and-place packaging system with vacuum lifter. Advances in Computer Science Research has published an article (651 kB) about the design and simulation of a paper roll packaging workstation based on RobotStudio.
