Poland: Revised Packaging and Packaging Waste Law takes effect as of 1 January 2014

03 February 2014

On January 1 2014, most provisions of the updated Polish Packaging and Packaging Waste Law that was approved last June went into effect. The 83 articles in the law bring Poland into compliance with EU requirements.
Among the changes are the obligation for packaging producers to register with the Ministry of Environment and the obligation that all packaging should be labeled as reusable or recyclable (article 15). The second annex provides formulas that producers will use to calculate their packaging recovery fees. Producers that fail to meet their mandatory recovery targets will pay higher fees. The law defines a maximum fee (Recycling Laws International, 8 January 2014).
