Research: Antimicrobial PLA film prepared with PCL and thymol for active packaging

27 June 2014

Researchers at the Kunming University of Science and Technology in China prepared antimicrobial active films based on polylactic acid (PLA) with poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and thymol.
The addition of PCL decreased the glass transition temperature of the films. Water vapor barrier properties of films slightly decreased with the increase of thymol loading. The antimicrobial properties of thymol containing films showed a significant activity against Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes. The results indicated the potential of PLA/PCL/thymol composites for applications in antimicrobial packaging. An article about the research is published in Polymers for Advanced Technologies.
