Norway: Government considers ending landfill tax

02 December 2014

According to an announcement by the industry association Avfall Norge (Waste Norway), the Government of Norway is seriously considering ending or phasing out the country's tax on waste sent to landfills.
The association hopes that tax will be eliminated in the final version of the 2015 federal budget. Waste Norway argues that so little waste is now being landfilled that the costs for local governments and businesses to implement the tax are greater than the financial revenue the tax creates. The tax as a disincentive has completed its mission. New requirements banning disposal of biodegradable waste also have rendered the tax less useful (Recycling Laws Bulletin, 29 October 2014).
