Dutch consumers waste three times more food than that they think they do

26 June 2014

Dutch consumers throw away three times more food than they think they do, according to research by AKB Bert Muller. In an online-survey 1000 Dutch consumers were asked how much food they think they waste annually.
Consumers think they throw away 15 kilo, but in reality they throw away an average of 47 kilo a year, a difference of 32 kilo. One third of the consumers said they never throw food away and two thirds said they only do this sometimes. The difference can be explained by the gradual characteristic of food waste. People throw away little bits at a time and do not realise that in total this adds up to almost 50 kilo a year (News Item Milieu Centraal, 13 May 2014).
