Consumers and packaging
An EU survey (1.54 MB), conducted by Two Sides and Toluna, sought to understand consumer preferences, perceptions, and attitudes towards packaging. Respondents were asked to choose their preferred packaging material (paper/cardboard, glass, metal, and plastic) based on 15 environmental, practical, and visual attributes.
A new consumer survey by G&S Business Communications has found that Americans are changing their perceptions of the food supply chain as a direct result of COVID-19. The coronavirus has raised their concerns about food safety and availability. 66% are at least somewhat concerned about contracting the disease through food packaging and 44% say they are cleaning food packaging with a disinfectant.

Trends
The World Packaging Organisation (WPO) has published a Packaging Trends Report (2.85 MB) based on the entries and winners of WorldStar Packaging Awards 2020.
In a two recent articles, Smithers discusses key trends and drivers for the global functional additives and barrier coatings industry for paper and board and for plastic packaging.

Packaging machinery
According to VDMA, 2019 was the ninth consecutive year of growth for German packaging machinery manufacturers. The companies produced packaging machinery worth around 7.3 billion euros, an increase of 2%. You can find more statistics here (213 kB). Germany is also a big importer of packaging machinery from the US. PMMI recently published the report ‘Successful Strategies to Enter the German Packaging Machinery Market’. Inkjet print, labels and release liner
In 2019, AWA (13,4 kB) estimates that global label demand was 66,216 million sqm, showing growth of some 3.2% over the prior year. 40% of these volumes were in pressure-sensitive labels, 35% in glue-applied labels and 19% in the sleeve labeling technologies. A chart (75 kB) gives an overview of the market by technology and a table (54 kB) of the market by region. AWA (14 kB) also predicts an overall growth of the global release liner market of 3.5% in 2019. A chart (368 kB) shows the market by region. According to Smithers, the inkjet print market is currently worth $80.4 billion and is expected to reach $118.2 billion in 2025. The market is discussed in a recent article.

Reusable packaging
The Reusable Packaging Association (RPA) has conducted a global reusable transport packaging industry survey (executive summary, 369 kB) to gather insights into recent performance as well as expert predictions for future growth of the industry. In an overview article (715 kB) on reusable packaging, published in Resources, Conservation & Recycling: X, researchers from Utrecht University review the environmental and economic impacts and discuss barriers and opportunities from retailer, producer, consumer, and policy perspectives.
