‘Green’ moisture-resistant film coating for paper/cardboard

05 December 2014

CaiLar uses a natural combination of starch and clay to create a new moisture-resistant film coating for paper and cardboard. The CaiLar innovation resulted from a collaboration between Sheffield Hallam and Karlstad University under the European funded project SustainPack, which aimed to encourage the use of recyclable packaging materials. The technology on which CaiLar is based is protected by a series of worldwide patents. Large scale pilot trials have proved that the coating technology, which is safe for food contact, is suitably robust. This means that CaiLar is now ready to be introduced onto the food packaging market (News Release Sheffield Hallam University, 1 December 2014).
