Estonia: Draft National Waste Plan presented to Parliament

30 June 2014

The Estonian Minister of Environment has presented the draft National Waste Management Plan 2014-2020 to the Estonian Parliament. The plan would increase the country’s overall recycling rate from 27% (2011) to 50% by 2020.
The plan sets a 2020 recycling target of 60% for packaging waste. By 2020, any packaging waste generation increase should not exceed two-thirds (2/3) the rate of economic growth.
The plan is organized around four broad action areas: promoting waste prevention, promoting separated waste collection and recycling, reducing environmental risks from waste and improving waste monitoring and reporting (Recycling Laws International, 23 May 2014).
