EFSA gives green light for rPET processes for food contact

15 May 2014

European regulators have approved three separate processes for producing PET for new food packs from materials recycled from used containers developed in France. Trays formulated via the process from Appe plastics, which employs 100% rPET, was approved for use in food contact and long-term storage at room temperature.
A second approved method came from Stralinger Recostar. This also covered food trays made from 100% rPET. The third approval was granted to Lorraine Plast Recycling. It covers production of bottles using up to 50% rPET and thermoformed trays and containers which have up to 85% for any food stuff except packaged water (News Item food-contact.com, 24 March 2014).
