EFSA advise on the health claim on iodine

28 January 2014

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has expressed a positive opinion on two health claims on iodine. The claim is based on the EU regulation 1924/2006 on nutrition and health claims of food. EFSA concludes that a causal link has been established between the intake of iodine and contribution to normal thyroid function and to normal cognitive development.
The following claims may be presented on the label and in health claim statements in commercial communications: “Iodine contributes to normal thyroid function” and “Iodine contributes to normal cognitive development”. They may not be recited in non-commercial communications or in the scientific press.
