Consumer organisation Foodwatch demands the European Union to stop the sale of cholesterol-lowering margarine in supermarkets

03 March 2014

As of 15 February 2014 new legislation EU nr. 718/2013, entered into force requiring products containing added plant sterols to include a warning that discourages people without cholesterol problems to consume these products. The regulation requires the indication ‘…that the product is not intended for people who do not need to control their blood cholesterol level’ for all products containing plant sterols.
Foodwatch is of the opinion that this formulation could lead to misunderstandings and has repeated its demand that these products should be treated as medication and therefore should only be available on prescription in pharmacies (News Release VMT, 17 February 2014).
