AUS: Stoush over safety of nano-materials in food packaging

The peak food standards body is under fire for excluding nanomaterials from its investigation into the safety of food packaging. Food Standards Australia New Zealand says it left out nanomaterials because the risks are not well defined and may need to be examined separately.
Friends of the Earth says the precautionary principle should have been employed, with food packaging containing nanomaterials banned until its safety is known. According to Friends of the Earth food packaging and nanomaterials is the biggest growing area of the nanotechnology industry in relation to food. So there is good reason to want to review nanomaterials in food packaging (ABC News, 25 November 2014).
