US: Study reveals misrepresentation of shrimp

19 November 2014

Oceana has released a new study that reveals misrepresentation of shrimp across the United States. DNA testing confirmed that 30% of the 143 shrimp products tested from grocery stores and restaurants were misrepresented. Oceana also found that consumers are often provided with little information about the shrimp they purchase; including where and how it was caught or farmed, making it difficult, if not impossible, for them to make informed choices.
Overall, 30% of over 400 shrimp products surveyed in grocery stores lacked information on country-of-origin, 29% lacked farmed/wild information and one in five did not provide either (Press Release Oceana, 30 October 2014).
