USA: Vermont Governor signs law requiring the labelling of food produced from genetic engineering

04 June 2014

The law, as enacted in Act No. 120, has been signed 8 May 2014 by the Vermont Governor P. Shumlin and will come into force as of 1 July 2016. Already introduced in 2013, the bill H 112 has passed both House of Representatives and State Senate before it has been enacted into law.
Under this law, food for human consumption offered for retail sale in Vermont that is entirely or partially produced with genetic engineering must be labelled as such. Violators face penalties and further action by the Attorney General’s Office. Although believed to get challenged constitutionally by producers, the law is heavily supported by Vermont consumers (News release Vermont government, 8 May 2014).
