US ban on three more phthalates proposed in senate

15 May 2014

Currently, the US Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act prohibits the use of benzyl butyl phthalate (BBP) in imported and domestically produced children’s products. Under S. 2120 three additional phthalates would be prohibited: diisononyl phthalate (DINP), diisodecyl phthalate (DIDP), or di-n-octyl phthalate (DnOP).
The three aforementioned phthalates are on the Initial Candidate Chemicals List prepared by the California Department of Toxic Substances Control under the Safer Consumer Products regulations. DINP and DIDP are also on the Proposition 65 list maintained by California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (State Recycling Laws Update, 4 April 2014).
