USA: Santa Fe, New Mexico approves single-use plastic carryout bag ban

10 April 2014

The Santa Fe City Council has approved Ordinance No. 2014-13, which bans the retail distribution of single-use plastic bags. The bill to create the ordinance originally included a provision to place a 10-cent fee on recyclable paper bags. However, the proposed fee was deleted from the final version.
No later than 12 months after the ordinance has taken effect (February 27, 2015), the Sustainable Santa Fe Commission will review the survey data and other information to be gathered by the Environmental Services Division and report to the City Council on any recommended changes to the ordinance, including adding a fee on recyclable paper bags (State Recycling Laws Update, 24 March 2014).
