USA: Ordinance banning plastic carryout bags approved in Chicago

21 May 2014

On April 24, the Chicago City Council’s Committee on Health and Environmental Protection approved an ordinance to ban plastic carryout bags. If the ordinance is approved, Chicago would become the second largest US municipality to ban the distribution of single-use plastic bags behind Los Angeles.
The ordinance would amend Chapter 11-4 of the Municipal Code of Chicago and ban the distribution of plastic carryout bags 120 days after the law is approved. Stores would be required to provide reusable bags, either free or for a fee. Stores that violate the plastic bag ban and/or fail to provide shoppers with reusable bags could be fined (State Recycling Laws Update, 28 April 2014).
