Packaging considerations in developing medicines for children

21 November 2014

Common packaging presentations for oral liquid pediatric drug products are glass bottle, plastic bottle, sachet, and stick pack configurations. The type of pack presentation selected is driven by the quality target product profile that is designed around the physicochemical properties of the drug substance and the desired drug product suitability for the target population.
The research shows which pack presentations can be used for active ingredients with high and low aqueous solubility. This work will help formulation scientists select the most appropriate pack presentation in the early stages of pediatric clinical development (Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 12 November 2014).
