US: Phase-out of non-compostable plastic bags in New Jersey

18 February 2016

In February 2016 A2396 was introduced in New Jersey. The bill would require covered stores to restrict the distribution of non-compostable plastic bags by 50% beginning on 30 November 2016, and eliminate their distribution entirely by 31 December 2018.
Beginning on 1 January 2019, only recyclable paper bags, compostable bags or reusable bags would be allowed. Covered stores include supermarkets, drug stores and other retail establishments with more than 1,000 square feet of retail space. Stores would report to the Department of Environment Protection by 30 November 2016 on progress in their non-compostable plastic bag reductions (State Recycling Laws Update, 8 February 2016).
