Using RF signals to test the status of items in the packages

27 September 2016

The essential mechanism of RFID-based smart packaging is to identify the tags rather than the items inside packages. However, an intruder may steal items or replace expensive items by cheap ones. RFID systems have no ability to detect such behaviors. Researchers at Xi'an Jiaotong University in China investigated the possibility of using commodity passive RFID systems (Echoscope) to test the internal status of packages. Echoscope extracts unique features from the backscatter signals penetrating the internal space of a package and compares them with the previously collected features during the check-in phase. An article about the research is published in the UbiComp2016 conference proceedings.
