Project CheckPack: Sensors monitor decay of food in food packaging

23 January 2014

Within the research project CheckPack a sensor is being developed that can check whether foods that are packaged in a protective atmosphere are still fresh, without opening the package. The sensor, which is incorporated in the packaging material, can also to detect leaks.
The CheckPack sensor should enable a constant availability of information about the quality of packaged food and the state of a package in each stage of the supply chain. This information is relevant for the producer, the distributor and the consumer. The sensor will allow us to detect damaged packaging or food which has spoiled before the theoretical expiration date (Press Release Ghent University, 13 January 2014).
