Manufacturing logistics and procurement – September 2025
Last mile logistics
A report issued by FarEye entitled ´Eye on the Last Mile’ is based on feedback from more than two hundred United States-based supply chain and logistics leaders. The report explores the challenges and opportunities that define success for enterprises navigating the complexities of modern logistics, technology integration and omnichannel delivery. One of the key findings in the report is that same-day delivery is expected to grow from 27% of deliveries today to 35% by 2027, which FarEye said signifies acceleration toward ultra-fast fulfilment. Automation and digital adoption in UK manufacturing
The report (1.2 MB) ‘Making it Smarter: Global Lessons for Accelerating Automation and Digital Adoption in UK Manufacturing’, by Make UK in partnership with Sage, explores how targeted innovation and digital investment - especially in SMEs - could add £150 billion to the UK’s GDP by 2035. The authors explore how leading nations like South Korea, Singapore, and Switzerland are transforming SME manufacturing through targeted support and the role of government strategy in enabling high-value innovation.
Annual pallet report of the US market
Modern Materials Handling has published its annual Pallet report of the US market, which examines the types and sizes of pallets that companies are using, mechanisms used to secure the loads on the pallets, and the broader role that pallets are playing in warehouse and DC operations. On the question ‘Is it necessary to create a minimum specification for pallets in your facility?’ respondents answered ‘Yes, and especially with automated equipment.’ In fact, 89% want a pallet spec for use with everything from roller conveyors to storage/retrieval machines.
Postal companies worldwide have reduced their annual CO2 emissions
According to DHL, key players in the global transport and logistics sector have established common standards that allow letters and parcels to be exchanged seamlessly across borders. Sharing the same goal, postal operators from twenty-two countries have succeeded in reducing their annual CO2 emissions by one third. As an industry, they have already achieved significant progress: much of the 'last mile' is now electrified, around 30% of the electricity used comes from renewable sources, and ever more distribution centres are being built with ecological standards in mind.
