Research: Influence of polyethylene packaging on shelf life and quality of gherkin

27 February 2014

Researchers at the College of Agriculture in India studied the effect of polyethylene packaging on the shelf life and quality of gherkin at room temperature. The treatments consisted of polythene bags of two gauges with five different ventilation levels.
The results revealed that 0% ventilation recorded the lowest physiological loss in weight irrespective of gauges. Gherkins stored in 0.25% ventilated polythene bags, irrespective of gauges were found to be promising under room temperature with less spoilage and a maximum shelf life of 7.33 and 7.00 days with 100 and 200 gauge respectively. An article about the research was published in Karnataka Journal of Agricultural Sciences.
