Research: Films with clove oil for active packaging of ground chicken meat

19 August 2014

In a study researchers at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre in India demonstrated that active CMC–PVOH films can be prepared by incorporation of clove oil. Addition of PVOH led to improvement in mechanical and permeability properties of film. The films improved the shelf life of ground chicken meat during refrigerated storage. These films were also effective in inhibiting inoculated Gram-positive food pathogens in meat thereby enhancing the safety of meat.
They concluded that the CMC–PVOH–clove oil films have potential as alternate active packaging material for meat preservation. An article about the research is published in Food Packaging and Shelf Life.
