NL: No decrease in food waste compared to 2009

30 September 2016

State secretary of Economic Affairs Martijn van Dam has sent the ‘Monitor food waste - Update 2009–2014’ to the Dutch House of Representatives on 18 August 2016. In 2014 the amount of food waste was between a minimum of 1.91 million tonnes and a maximum of 2.63 million tonnes. That comes down to between 114 kg and 157 kg of food waste per capita. In his letter, he states that unfortunately we have to accept the fact that the absolute amount of food waste has probably not decreased compared to 2009. On the other hand, there does not appear to be an increase in terms of percentage. He notes that the monitor should be viewed in the context of the developments in households and industry.
