NL: Confusing serving sizes on packaging

01 March 2016

Producers often use different serving sizes for comparable products. The Dutch Food Centre (Voedingscentrum), FNLI and the foundation 'Ik-Kies-Bewust' each have a different list of guidelines for serving sizes. The Dutch consumer association (Consumentenbond) wants all serving size statements to disappear, or that one guideline will be made for all food producers to use. The Consumentenbond asked over 2800 consumers what they considered a serving. The opinions varied considerably. Two thirds of the panel members check the nutritional value per serving. Consumers that want to compare products should best check the nutritional value per 100 grams (Consumentenbond, 23 February 2016).
