NL: Smoked salmon packaging needs improvements

26 May 2016

There is a lot of unclear information about the shelf life of the product on the packaging of smoked salmon. The Dutch consumer association (Consumentenbond) wants producers to improve on the clarity of the storage advice for smoked salmon. The Consumentenbond assessed the freshness and hygiene of the smoked salmon in the supermarket and examined the storage information on the packaging. Thirteen out of twenty assessed products had a best before date, instead of a use by date. The best before date suggests that the smoked salmon is still fit for consumption after the date has passed, which is absolutely undesirable with such a vulnerable product (Consumentenbond, 28 April 2016).
