NL: Amount of salt in food products slightly decreased in 2013

10 September 2014

According to a recent study of Netherlands Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), the salt content in food products slightly decreases, yet there still are large differences in salinity amongst similar products from different manufacturers. The largest salt reduction has been found for bread, canned vegetables and cheese, whilst salinity in frozen snacks, ready meals, sauces, soups and meats did not significantly decrease.
Although not required yet, the salt content is stated on approximately three-quarter of all products. A point of attention is that labels are often not adjusted even though salinity has been reduced in the product (News Release NVWA, 28 July 2014).
