New project BIO4MAP: biodegradable and recyclable packages for cheeses and fresh pasta

21 May 2014

The Technological Institute of Plastic (AIMPLAS) in Spain will be coordinating the European project BIO4MAP. Object is to develop a new transparent, multilayer, barrier, biodegradable and recyclable package for fresh food and different kinds of cheeses that require Modified Atmosphere Packaging.
At least two types of thermoplastic and biodegradables materials will be combined in the design of the new package, mainly the polylactic acid (PLA) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVOH). PLA has excellent mechanical properties and high transparency, and PVOH has high barrier to gases and is water-soluble, allowing the package to be recyclable and biodegradable (Press Release AIMPLAS, 12 May 2014).
