Medication errors? Packaging can help

The new FDA guidance document, “Safety Considerations for Product Design to Minimize Medication Errors”, recognizes the crucial role of packaging and labeling, and offers advice for using them to cut down on medication errors. The guidance document contains over two full pages of content under the heading, “Points to Consider During Development of the Container Closure Design.” The agency defines “packaging system,” as “the sum of packaging components that together contain and protect the dosage form. This includes primary packaging components and secondary packaging components, if the latter are intended to provide additional protection to the drug product” (Packaging World, 3 May 2016).
