Lithuania: Ministry of Environment sends proposed container deposit scheme changes to Parliament

12 February 2014

A review of the response to a public consultation on proposed amendments to Lithuania’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Law has been completed. The Lithuanian Environmental Minister has signed the draft legislation and forwarded it to the Seimas (Parliament) and Council of Ministers for approval.
Among the proposed changes are revisions to the national container deposit scheme that would take effect on January 1, 2015. They include addition of plastic and metal containers to the scheme (Since 2006, a 25-centai deposit has been placed on glass bottles only). Other amendments establish a system for the take back of single-use packaging (Recycling Laws International, 24 January 2014).
