LCA of two sandwich packs: household aluminium foil and a reusable rigid plastic box

02 May 2014

In a LCA study for the European Aluminium Foil Association (EAFA), IFEU examined the environmental impacts of two different ways to safely pack a sandwich. The two different packages were a household aluminium foil and a reusable rigid plastic box that is cleaned in a dishwasher after each use.
The LCA results show that the major impact in most of the examined environmental impact indicators originates from the production of electricity for producing aluminium foil, or in case of the plastic box, for the operation of the dishwasher. Compared with the plastic box the aluminium foil shows lower or equal environmental impacts than the plastic box in almost all examined impact categories.
