Impact of variations in a front-of-package nutrition labeling system on consumer comprehension

23 April 2014

The International Food Information Council Foundation, USA examined consumer comprehension, ease of understanding, and interpretation of nutrition information in the voluntary front-of-package labeling system under consideration by the Grocery Manufacturers Association.
Consumers agreed that more nutrition information on the front of package assisted them in comprehension and that such information should appear on more products. Presentation of the front of package with nutrients to encourage and limit and including some nutrients in both absolute numbers and %DV likely satisfied consumers’ needs. An article about the research is published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.
