Large-scale bioplastic production from non-edible biomass

08 January 2016

The EU funded BioConSepT project aims to produce valuable platform chemicals out of biomass streams which are not in competition with the food chain. During its closing conference, BioConSepT proposed the viability of 2 large scale production chains based on waste fats and oils and lignocellulose.
In comparison to current processes for bioplastic production, the processes BioConSepT developed do not compete with food production, and the processes aim to be cheaper and more sustainable. The 2nd generation biomass used is transformed into intermediates like biobased polymers, resins, plasticisers and solvents, which can be applied in bioplastic production (News Item VITO, 18 November 2015).
