No EU plans for harmonised gluten-free logo

26 May 2016

At this moment the European Commission is not planning to harmonise the use of ‘gluten-free’ logos in the European Union. The Commission has no information that shows that the use of these logos has influence on consumer behaviour. According to the European Commission it is not necessary to make the use of the term ‘gluten-free’ obligatory to protect consumers. It is already mandatory to mention allergens in a language that can easily be understood by consumers in the member states where the food product is on the market. They also have to be emphasised on the label, to make them easy to find between the rest of the ingredients in the list (VMT, 10 May 2016).
