Think tank raises concerns on EU circular economy packaging

12 December 2014

An industry think tank by EUROPEN has issued a joint statement commenting on the plans by the European Commission for implementing a circular economy in the field of packaged products and packaging materials. The document ‘A growth-oriented circular economy for packaging and packaged goods in the Internal Market’ raises three concerns relating to the proposed revision of the Waste Framework Directive (WFD) and Packaging and Packaging Waste Directive (PPWD). These concerns address 1) the packaging targets (a.o. cost/benefit analysis) 2) the Extended Producer Responsibility EPR (a.o. the roles of stakeholders involved) and 3) the internal market (avoid national packaging design requirements).
