Brazil: Amendments to national policy on solid waste proposed

19 September 2014

At the beginning of September PL 7929/2014 was introduced in the Brazilian House of Representatives. The bill follows a report that most municipalities have failed to submit modern waste management plans as required by the National Policy on Solid Waste of 2010.
The bill proposes two changes to the National Policy on Solid Waste to address the problem. First, municipalities would receive two additional years to prepare and submit waste management plans to the Brazilian Ministry of Environment. Second, national and state governments would provide financial and technical resources to help municipalities prepare the required plans (Recycling Laws International, 4 September 2014).
