BE: Impact of sustainability labelling on food choices

29 June 2016

Research by Ellen Van Loo shows that Belgians are willing to pay more for food that has been produced in a sustainable way. She did research on the attitude of consumers towards food with a sustainability mark on the pack. These marks explain which efforts the producer makes concerning the environment, but also which ethical choices are made. Examples are organic, free-range, and fair trade.
Consumers apparently still do not know exactly what each mark means. In the case of chicken fillet, the organic mark proved to be less popular than a claim about free-range chickens, while free-range covers only a small part of the criteria for the organic mark (Press Release UGent, 30 May 2016).
