Australia: Government releases progress report on National Waste Policy implementation

03 June 2014

In 2009, Australia approved a 10-year National Waste Policy (NWP) that included 16 strategies to address a half dozen priority areas. In May the Department of the Environment released a NWP progress report covering 2012-2013. Mostly, the report provides anecdotal evidence of progress.
The strategies in the progress report address, among others, sustainable procurement, packaging waste, harmonizing Australian waste classifications and definitions with the international community, reducing biodegradable waste sent to landfill, regional and remote waste and resource recovery, auditing, and waste data reporting (Recycling Laws International, 16 May 2014).
