Asphalt, car tyres and packaging from biomass

02 May 2016

ECN is developing a process that makes it possible to separate biomass into lignin, cellulose fibres, and hemicellulose sugars. Tests show that these raw materials can be used to produce high quality products, like asphalt, car tyres, packaging materials and marine fuel. One of the partners in the project financed by TKI-BBE (Top consortium for Knowledge and Innovation Biobased Economy) is packaging producer PaperFoam.
By the end of 2017, the project partners expect to be ready to actually produce items, for example packaging. This will allow the project partners to test the products in practice and gain insight in the possible applications (News Item ECN, 13 April 2016).
