Pharmacy logistics in hospitals still fails sometimes

29 February 2016

Pharmacy supplies represent up to 90% of the total value of what hospitals have in stock, and they often struggle with the organisation of these articles because of the diversity. Together with 17 hospitals and logistic service providers the Flemish Institute for Logistics (VIL) worked on the ideal processes for the organisation of pharmacy logistics in hospitals in the project ‘Apotheeklogistiek bij ziekenhuizen’.
To close the medication loop and completely rule out incorrect application of medicine ‘bed side scanning’ – scanning the medicine and the wristband of the patient – is necessary. This can only be done with medicine in unidoses (Press Release VIL, 23 February 2016).
