Packaging research at universities
On 1 July 2021, Vera Truijen held a speech entitled ‘Development for returnable home delivery packaging’ and two weeks later Daan van Urk held a speech entitled ‘Adapting the Stage-gate Methodology to FrieslandCampina System Development Projects’. Both speeches were part of their master assignment at University of Twente. Chairman of the assessment committee was prof. Roland ten Klooster who holds the NVC Chair Packaging Design and Management.
Lund University has published a master thesis (5.3 MB) entitled ‘Exploring the opportunities of reducing the environmental impact of ready meal trays.’ Lund University has also published a master thesis (1.5 MB) entitled ‘Packaging and E-commerce, An exploration of needs and potential innovations.’

Consumer behaviour
The Foodservice Packaging Institute has released an executive summary (123kB) of its second US and Canada Consumer Perceptions on Foodservice Packaging Report.
A DS Smith survey in the UK has found that 49% prefer in-store shopping over online or click and collect, while the same number said that click and collect was the “worst of both worlds.”

E-commerce and packaging
Amazon has announced that in 2021 they are expanding the Frustration-Free Packaging Vendor Incentive Program to include the largest-sized Sortable ASINs, as well as expanding incentives for Non-Sortable ASINs. Vendors will receive financial incentives per certified unit shipped between 1 October 2021 and 31 December 2022.
Packaging World has published an supplement entitled ‘Packaging for e-commerce’, including 5 emerging trends in E-commerce package design. Packaging News has also published a supplement looking at E-commerce and the implications of the pandemic on consumer habits and the supply chains.

Amazon Business has released the 2021 B2B E-commerce in Evolution Report, which shares B2B trends and new insights from U.S. procurement. This report also provides insights for business decision-makers, on both the buying and selling sides, as they continue their digital transformation journey in 2021 and beyond. According to a new report by Euromonitor, approximately 58% of retail professionals say the pandemic accelerated new technology-related product launches at their company. CBRE has conducted an analysis (8.6 MB) of how e-commerce’s future growth will impact industrial & logistics markets worldwide.
