Developments in logistics and impact of a year of COVID-19
A new report (3.7 MB) by the Capgemini Research Institute (101 kB) examining the impact of the past year’s disruption on consumer products and retail (CP&R) supply chains, has found that 66% of organisations say their strategy will change significantly in the next 3 years, as they adapt to the pandemic and embed resiliency into their operations. Just 23% of consumer product organisations and 28% of retailers believe that their supply chain is agile enough to support the organisation’s evolving business needs.

GS1 has published their ‘Trend Research 2020-2021 Navigating the next normal’ (2.7 MB). The report analyses the top business trends and enabling technologies in the context of the disruptions of the past year and offers recommendations to industry and GS1 on how to navigate the new reality and the future.
According to an industry report released by MHI in collaboration with Deloitte, nearly half of supply chain leaders surveyed have dramatically accelerated spending on digital technologies to make their operations more responsive and forward-looking during the pandemic. KPI’s in the flexible packaging industry
Technical University of Cluj-Napoca research (2.7 MB) entitled KPIs for Operational Performance Assessment in Flexible Packaging Industry is published in Sustainability. The results indicate that the main aspects considered by experts for assessing manufacturing plants operational performance are financial issues followed by production, customers contentment, quality, employee satisfaction and environmental protection.

CE marking for existing machinery or machine configurations
GMV (in Dutch) reports that FME has recently published the 'Transformation of Machinery' paper (6.3 MB). This guiding document aims to answer CE marking questions in the case of modifications of existing machinery or machine configurations. When is new CE marking required, for which parts or for the whole of a machine configuration and who is responsible for this?

Automation and self-service
According to Reichelt Elektronik (in Dutch), predictive maintenance is becoming more and more common in the Dutch industry. Production machines are becoming smarter, whether it is by new, smarter systems or by extensions to existing machines. VIL (in Dutch) is starting a new project Self-service in Logistics, in which it will map the entire process of reception (access control, follow-up, yard management,…) at the participating companies. The goal of the project is to convert the manual aspect to a semi or fully automatic process. The introduction of self-service in logistics should lead to safer and more efficient yard management.

Aligning GS1 data into a global data model
On 20 November 2021, GS1 (in Dutch) will be aligning the Benelux data model with the GS1 Global Data Model. This can be used by suppliers and retailers in the Benelux food and drugstore sector across the Benelux to exchange product information via GS1 Data Source.
