Packaging market
According to a new report by Smithers, the world packaging demand will break the $1-trillion-mark in 2021 and increase to $1.22 trillion in 2026. You can find more details in a recent article.
According to L.E.K. Consulting research, 65% of brand owners expect to increase their packaging spend over the next two years.

Designing packaging
Researchers at Chungbuk National University have developed an elderly-friendly pouch-based packaging from the perspective of universal design. An article (1.42 MB) about the research is published in the Journal of Open Innovation.
University of Banja Luka researchers have found that customers prefer non-standard packaging shapes and simple graphic design, as well as packaging with added value. An article (2 MB) about the research is published in the Journal of Graphic Engineering and Design.

Consumers and sustainability
In January 2020, we reported on a paper (756 kB) by the Tinbergen Institute about the results of a natural field experiment in Amsterdam that found that consumers have no clue about how to recycle bioplastics. An article (1009 kB) about the research is now published in Ecological Economics. An INCPEN UK survey (688 kB) has found that lack of information about what happens to recyclates after collection is the top reason that negatively influences public confidence in recycling.
The NL Agrifood Monitor 2021 (factsheet in Dutch, 1.25 MB) by WUR shows that recyclable packaging is important when buying products. Animal welfare and environmental friendly quality marks are also a positive influence. More than half of US consumers surveyed about sustainability by The Packer said that eco-friendly packaging helps them define whether a product is sustainable. Canadian research (707 kB) by the University of Guelph published in Maritime Studies, has found that consumers want to ensure sustainable fishing practices but are confused over numerous ecolabels on seafood.

Patient-centricity and pharmaceutical packaging
Two articles by Lund University researcher Giana Carli Lorenzini were recently published: a study (1.15 MB) on pharmaceutical companies and their views of patient-centricity, published in Therapeutic Innovation and Regulatory Science and a study (234 kB) on home care nurses and medication management for older patients published in Healthcare.

Food Industry in NL and in Asia Pacific
The Food Industry Monitor 2021 (in Dutch, 10.39 MB) by FNLI (in Dutch) shows that the Dutch food sector maintains its strong economic position after a corona year and Brexit. However, companies are currently confronted with large cost increases of, among others, packaging materials. Mintel has launched ‘Asia Pacific: The Food and Drink Landscape 2021.’ The report that you can download after filling in your details, gives latest market research, product innovation insights and consumer trends.
