The packaging market
Information on developments in packaging is provided in the Raconteur newspaper publication Future of Packaging 2021 (3.79 MB). The US packaging industry contributes $537.91 billion in total economic output to the national economy, according to a new study (1.82 MB) released by AMERIPEN. According to BIR, worldwide production of recovered fibre fell from just over 250 million tonnes in 2018 to less than 244 million tonnes in 2019. However, global production of paper and board using recovered fibres held steady at just below 211 million tonnes. According to Cepi, EU paper and board consumption decreased by 5.3% in 2020 compared to 2019, totalling 71 million tonnes. More statistics can be found here (2.74 MB). The market for consumer goods
IRI has released 2020 New Product Pacesetters™ (7.91 MB), revealing top new launches across the food and non-food sectors. Another IRI report (7.62 MB) looks at how CPG manufacturers can better navigate the post-COVID-19 environment. According to research (in Dutch, 2.41 MB) by ABN AMRO (in Dutch), the ageing population will have a major impact on the food sector in the Netherlands and Germany in the decades ahead. The proportion of older people is rising, and with it come different needs such as different packaging and purchasing channels. Sustainable packaging and plastics are a key issue for commercial food buyers in Ireland, according to new research (6.75 MB) conducted by Bord Bia.

Consumer behaviour
Packaging characteristics like colour and information can lead consumers to expect products with reduced sugar to taste sweeter than they are, according to WUR research that you will receive by e-mail after filling in your details. In an article (406 kB) published in the Annals of R.S.C.B., Amrita School of Arts & Sciences researchers explore the relationship between colour identity and purchasing behaviour in the packaging of Cadbury chocolates. May contain traces of peanut: new research (422 kB) by Utrecht University on allergen information, published in Clinical & Experimental Allergy, gives recommendations for the market. A survey (587 kB) by IFIC finds that when shopping, most Americans cite that the product itself is where they look for information about the ingredients. Almost half (48%) of global consumers believe companies are responsible for increasing the amount of packaging that is recycled, according to Mintel research that you can download after filling in your details. University of Exeter research (abstract), published in Global Environmental Change, shows public concern about the impact of marine plastic pollution on human health. A BeFrank survey shows that over a third of Dutch workers feels that they have started to live more sustainably in the past year.

Dutch trade magazine Vraag en Aanbod publishes a weekly overview of the prices for plastics (in Dutch). The prices given are estimated averages between the gross prices published in the trade journals and the net prices.
